FRESH FROM LOCAL MARKETS

Queen Elizabeth at the Farmers MarketThe Island’s weekly markets for local produce take place every Friday in St James’ and St Thomas’ Squares, Newport, between 9.00am and 2.00pm.  St James’ Square was the old market square for Newport.  This market was revived by Vectis Food and Craft Association in 2007.  There are nearly 40 stalls at markets in Newport on a Friday, all selling local food and crafts.  The idea of these markets is to work with local shopkeepers to revitalise Newport town centre, where there are plenty of cafes, pubs and restaurants with outside seating areas, making for a festive air on Market days.

Increasing numbers of consumers like to know that they can trace the origin of their purchases and learn direct from the producer about what they are buying and how it has been produced or made.

All products on display in the markets are grown, reared, brewed, pickled, baked, smoked, processed or made locally.  What’s the difference between these markets and any other?  The public can be confident of the origins of the food and ask questions of the very people who make the crafts. An effective ‘partnership’ is now developing with local restaurants and hotels that will have long term benefits for everyone for years to come.

We were proud to serve a rather special customer – yes, this is Her Majesty the Queen talking about local produce at the Horringford Gardens’ stall in May 2004 when she paid an official visit to the Isle of Wight.
